Summary:

The City of Markham, part of Canada’s second largest tech hub, is experiencing exponential growth. As a result, the Economic Growth, Culture and Entrepreneurship Department is looking for a university/graduate student who is a dedicated self-starter to work in our fast-paced environment by assisting with research, development and community engagement initiatives. The successful candidate must have a good understanding of economic development, with research and marketing experience. This position reports to the Senior Business Development Officer.

The summer student position will provide technical assistance within the Economic Growth, Culture and Entrepreneurship Department.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide in-depth qualitative and quantitative research abilities and evaluation of options
  • Undertake and/or assist with research and implementation of projects to support strategic policy, business development and retention, and investment attraction initiatives
  • Research emerging economic development issues
  • Assist project managers on key issues and development of RFPs, as needed
  • Prepare meeting agendas and minutes
  • Prepare presentations using PowerPoint
  • Perform customer service functions under the supervision of senior staff
  • Provide administrative and statistical support to senior team members in the fulfillment of event and program initiatives
  • Provide analytical, research and data mining support to the department
  • Assist in the preparation of articles for the economic development newsletter
  • Assist in the design and maintenance of MS Excel databases, and the department’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool
  • Provide support for business events
  • Respond to information inquires as assigned
  • Assist with the co-ordination of international and other liaison programs
  • Develop and implement new marketing and advertising concepts
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a University program in Urban Planning, Business, Economic Development, Marketing, Planning, Geography, or related discipline
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft suite of products
  • Demonstrated experience in researching complex issues
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations and procedures
  • Good report writing and communication skills
  • Must have good analytical and organizational skills
  • Must have excellent attention to detail
  • Must have well developed computer skills
  • Must be highly motivated and excellent listener
  • Must be able to contribute positively to a respectful professional environment

Duration and Hours:

  • May to end of August 2025
  • Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, 35 hours per week (excluding Holidays)

Location: On-site at the City of Markham office at 101 Town Centre Boulevard, Markham, ON
