This job posting represents multiple positions within different ministries and at various locations across Ontario. What can I expect to do in this role?

Work Description

As a Fire Assistant, you may have the opportunity to work on some or all of the following activities:
  • Assist with information management in support of planning, media relations, promotions, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), fire and emergency response programs delivery.
  • Help with equipment maintenance and repair, conduct warehouse and inventory duties, and support science and technology projects related to the fire program.
  • Aid with resource management programs by travelling with staff on field trips to conduct surveys, data collection, mapping, inspections, and interviews.
  • Provide administrative and clerical support, including organizing and maintaining files for electronic and manual records/data (e.g. applications for employment, personnel fire history, and qualifications), and provide word processing support (e.g. compose routine correspondence, prepare reports, presentations, graphics, etc.).
Note: You may be required to work outdoors.
How do I qualify? Mandatory

You must meet all eligibility criteria by the first day of employment (contracts begin between May and July):

  • Student Status: You must be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) OR you must have graduated within the past six months (for example, if you graduated in December, you can apply for and start a summer student position up until June of the following year).
  • Age: You must be a minimum of 15 years of age. There is no maximum age limit.
  • Residency: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.
  • Work Status: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) for the full duration of your summer employment.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills
  • You apply your written communication skills to document findings, record data, and prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports).
  • You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively in a team environment, and have a strong work ethic with the ability to work independently.

Technical Skills and Knowledge
  • You apply your experience using Microsoft Office applications, such as Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheets), and PowerPoint (presentations), as well as email and the internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents.

Analytical and Organizational Skills
  • You apply your planning and organizational skills to collect, organize, review, and verify information/data through review of files, reports, and other means.
  • You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize, and prioritize your work to meet competing deadlines.

Other Requirements
  • Certain positions require a valid Ontario G2 (or higher) Driver's Licence or equivalent.
  • You will be required to travel to accompany staff on day field trips to conduct surveys, data collection, mapping, inspections, and interviews.
  • You will be working outdoors in diverse weather conditions with some physical activity involved, including traversing through fields, streams, and forests, in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations.
