Product Development Technologist

About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Product Development Technologist to join our team at Gay Lea Foods.
As a key member of our R&D department, you will be responsible for employing scientific and technological knowledge with respect to techniques, processes, methods, materials, and ingredients in a food pilot plant.
You will support our R&D activities in formulation and development of new products from concept stage to prototype and full-scale production.
The role involves operating pilot plant manufacturing equipment for batch trials, conducting analytical testing on samples and finished goods, performing laboratory testing including organoleptic and instrumentation, managing and training coop students, conducting sensory analysis of dairy products, preparing samples and paperwork for external lab testing, coordinating preventive and ongoing maintenance of equipment, maintaining ingredient inventory, maintaining laboratory and pilot plant cleanliness, following quality and safety programs, conducting experiments and plant trials in manufacturing facilities as required, and traveling up to 20% to various sites.
Responsibilities:
- Operate pilot plant manufacturing equipment for batch trials
- Conduct analytical testing on samples and finished goods
- Perform laboratory testing including organoleptic and instrumentation
- Manage and train coop students
- Conduct sensory analysis of dairy products
- Prepare samples and paperwork for external lab testing
- Coordinate preventive and ongoing maintenance of equipment
- Maintain ingredient inventory
- Maintain laboratory and pilot plant cleanliness
- Follow quality and safety programs
- Conduct experiments and plant trials in manufacturing facilities as required
- Travel up to 20% to various sites
Requirements:
- Minimum College diploma in Food Science/Food Technology, Food Analytical Chemistry, Food Microbiology, or Food/Chemical Engineering
- Valid G2 or G license with access to a car daily
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Work primarily on days but must be able to work flexible hours based upon business needs
- Understand federal and provincial government regulations
- Knowledge of ingredients functionality and processes typically used in dairy manufacturing
Estimated Salary: $80,000 - $110,000 per year
