About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Tunnel Design and Portal Development Manager to join our team at Webuild, an international construction company of civil engineering pioneers. This is a full-time 100% onsite position at our downtown office in Toronto, ON.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the design efforts of the DJV team for tunnel and portal development, ensuring alignment with the CJV construction strategy, and managing the submission of building permits to authorities as needed.

Main Responsibilities

  • Oversight of architectural, structural, and civil design phases for tunnel and portal projects, ensuring adherence to safety, functionality, and durability standards.
  • Management of the design lifecycle for multiple tunnel and portal projects, from concept through completion, including planning, scheduling, and resource management.
  • Coordination with internal teams (e.g., engineering, geotechnical, and construction) as well as external consultants, contractors, and regulatory authorities to achieve alignment on project goals and design specifications.
  • Ensuring that all designs comply with local and international safety standards, including seismic, fire, and ventilation requirements.
  • Detailed reviews of design plans, site inspections, and prompt issue resolution to ensure quality and consistency across all projects.
  • Integration of innovative engineering and design practices into projects, focusing on enhancing safety, functionality, and sustainability in tunnel and portal designs.
  • Development and management of design budgets, ensuring that all projects are completed within allocated financial resources without compromising on quality.
  • Maintenance of accurate records of design documents, changes, approvals, and project progress, with regular status reports for senior management and other stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience (typically 5+ years) in tunnel and underground structures design, including hands-on project management.
  • Previous experience working with Design Joint Ventures (DJV) and Construction Joint Ventures (CJV) is highly desirable.
  • Proven track record in coordinating multidisciplinary teams and managing complex design processes in infrastructure projects.
  • Proficiency in tunnel and portal design, including knowledge of various construction methodologies (e.g., cut-and-cover, bored tunnels).
  • Familiarity with relevant software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or specialized tunneling software (e.g., Plaxis, GeoStudio).
  • Strong understanding of geotechnical and structural analysis, with experience in risk assessment and safety standards for underground construction.

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or geotechnical engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in underground projects design and construction activities/projects in Ontario.
  • Proficiency in design and schedule software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Primavera P6, MP).
  • Strong understanding of relevant codes and standards (e.g., NEC, IEEE).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Experience with project management tools and methodologies is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

This role offers a competitive salary range of $120,000 - $160,000 per annum, commensurate with experience, plus benefits and opportunities for career growth.
