Job Summary

The Associate Physician (AP) plays a crucial role in the Division of Pediatric Plastic Surgery at BC Children's Hospital and Women's Hospital. Reporting to the attending plastic surgeons, the AP works in a team-based setting to increase capacity and service delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Rounds on surgical patients with team members, including staff surgeons, fellows, residents, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals.
  2. Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, and medication reconciliations in accordance with College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia and PHSA standards.
  3. Participates in the management of day-to-day patient care, including writing medical orders in Cerner and enabling patient transfers from the PICU to the ward under a surgical MRP.
  4. Orders appropriate investigations and follows up on results.
  5. Arranges consultations with other departments/divisions for patient care.
  6. Participates in discharge planning for ward patients.
  7. Responds to in-hospital emergencies in consultation with attending staff.
  8. Communicates with families, consultant physicians, referring physicians, and family physicians regarding patient management plans.
  9. Performs procedures within the scope of demonstrated competence, including wound assessment, burn care, and cast application.
  10. Assists in the operating room, emergency room, and minor procedures room with operative care.
  11. Provides teaching and supervision for medical students and residents.
  12. Attends morbidity and mortality rounds, QA/QI sessions, and educational/research sessions.
  13. Complies with Associate Physician programs' CPD reporting requirements.
  14. Participates in professional development activities, including accredited training recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.
  15. Participates in scheduled 'on call' duties.
Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess:

  • A medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
  • A minimum of two years of accredited postgraduate training in pediatrics or a surgical discipline, verified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
  • Successful completion of the Royal College Subspecialist Examination Affiliate Program in Pediatric Critical Care.
  • Successful completion of Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination or Steps 1 through 3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations.
  • Meet the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia's English language proficiency requirements.
  • Be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia in the Associate Physician class.
  • Hold Canadian citizenship, be a permanent resident, or be legally able to live and work in British Columbia.
  • Commit to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada.
