Vancouver Community College is seeking a highly skilled Sign Language Interpreter to provide exceptional support to Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf-blind students, faculty, and staff. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in ensuring equal access to education and communication.
Key Responsibilities- Provide accurate and effective interpretation services in various settings, including lectures, labs, tests, and college events.
- Explain the interpreter's role to administrators, instructors, and staff to promote understanding and collaboration.
- Utilize student feedback to adjust interpretation services and ensure high-quality support.
- Prepare for assignments by obtaining necessary materials, including lecture notes, print materials, and technical vocabulary resources.
- Demonstrate professional boundaries and excellent interpersonal skills when working with students, staff, and faculty.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with students, interpreters, and college community members by working collaboratively and providing feedback.
- Contribute to the success of communication strategies by providing insights to the Interpreting Services Department Supervisor and educational team.
- Assist the Interpreting Services Department Supervisor with departmental duties as required.
- Completion of Grade 12 and a recognized Interpreter Training Program.
- At least three years of experience in interpreting American Sign Language, contact varieties, and oral interpreting in an educational setting.
- Incumbents with the provincial Postsecondary Screen and Written Test of Knowledge (WTK) are preferred.
- Membership in the Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI) is required.
- Excellent sign language skills, including fluency in ASL, contact variety, oral interpreting, and other visual/gestural modes of communication.
- Knowledge and appreciation of Deaf culture and issues facing Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf-blind students.
- Clear understanding of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, ethics, history, best practices, and current issues in the field.
- Proficiency in using email, MS Word, MS ACCESS, internet, videophones, and other communication technology used by Deaf people.
- Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member.
- Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to work under tight timelines.
