Sign Language Interpreter

Vancouver Community College is seeking a highly skilled Sign Language Interpreter to join our team. As a Sign Language Interpreter, you will play a critical role in ensuring equal access to education for Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf-blind students.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide interpretation services during lectures, labs, tests, field trips, and other educational activities.
- Explain the interpreter's role to administrators, instructors, and staff.
- Utilize student feedback to make necessary adjustments to interpretation services.
- Obtain preparatory materials to prepare for assignments.
- Demonstrate professional boundaries and good interpersonal skills with students and staff.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with students, interpreters, and college community members.
- Provide insight on communication strategies to the Interpreting Services Department Supervisor and other team members.
- Assist with departmental duties as required.
- Completion of Grade 12 plus graduation from a recognized Interpreter Training Program.
- At least three years' experience in interpreting American Sign Language (ASL) in an educational setting.
- Incumbents with the provincial Postsecondary Screen and the Written Test of Knowledge (WTK) are preferred.
- Membership in the Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI) is required.
- Excellent sign language skills, knowledge of Deaf culture, and appreciation of issues facing Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf-blind students.
- Proficient in the use of email, MS Word, MS ACCESS, internet, videophones, and other communication technology used by Deaf people.
