Deputy Chief of Police Opportunity

We are seeking a seasoned law enforcement leader to serve as our next Deputy Chief of Police. As a key member of our senior leadership team, you will provide strategic guidance and direction to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of our modern, evolving, and proactive public safety partnership with the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of our police service as a modern, evolving, and proactive public safety partner with the community.
  • Appointed by the SSMPS Board and reporting to the Chief of Police, you will lead our organization in a culture of continuous improvement and service excellence.
  • Develop and implement strategies to support staff, uniform, and civilians in creating a highly inclusive environment of equity, integrity, and fairness.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to explore alternate forms of service delivery while maintaining strong relationships at all levels.

Requirements:

  • Several years of experience in progressive supervisory or senior administrative positions, ideally in a municipal policing environment.
  • Deep understanding of emerging issues in community safety and a positive reputation for leading proactive change in this space.
  • Respected team leader and mentor committed to the ongoing professionalization of our service to respond to the evolving nature of policing.
  • Politically astute, creative, solutions-oriented, and able to act in a timely fashion to solve critical situations.

We are a modern and progressive police service committed to the continued refinement of our community policing service delivery model. With an approved 2023 budget of 33.8 million and consisting of 215 members, we deliver proactive, intelligence-led police services to approximately 75,000 citizens of Sault Ste. Marie.
