Aquatics Instructor/Lifeguard Job Description

This role supports the YMCA of Northern Alberta's mission to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver high-quality services through excellent relationships with participants.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans for assigned classes, providing quality instruction and supervision.
  • Ensure a safe and positive atmosphere in the aquatic area, adhering to YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Respond to incidents and accidents, providing emergency care and support as needed.
  • Role model best practices daily, interacting with members and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with volunteers, members, and colleagues.
  • Stay up-to-date with YMCA aquatics programs and schedules, referring participants to other programs as needed.
  • Participate in regular feedback and coaching to improve individual and team performance.
  • Maintain accurate records, including daily water tests, pool attendance tracking, and maintenance sheets.
Requirements:
  • Minimum 16 years of age, with supervision of an 18+ year old lifeguard.
  • Lifeguard certifications: Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C & AED, Lifesaving National Lifeguard (NL).
  • Instructor certifications: Intermediate First Aid, CPR-C & AED, Lifesaving Swim Instructor (SI) or YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI).
  • Oxygen Administration (O2) certification within 6 months of hire date.
  • Lifesaving Swim Instructor (SI), First Aid Instructor (FAI), or YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI) certification within the first year of hire date.
  • Aquatics Emergency Care (AEC) and National Coaching certification (NCCP) are assets.
  • Able to obtain a Police Information Check with Vulnerable sector check.
  • Must obtain employer-specific WHMIS and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard and instructor.
  • Able to handle difficult situations and customer complaints with confidence.
  • Able to prioritize many tasks on an ongoing basis, organized and able to follow through.
  • Good decision-making capability and able to be interrupted frequently.
