Environmental Ecologist Job Description

Gannett Fleming's Environmental Team in Toronto is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Ecologist to contribute to our growing team in Ontario.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct natural heritage studies to support transportation, transit, and municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Review and interpret data from provincial and federal online databases to summarize natural heritage existing conditions.
  • Lead environmental field studies/programs, including vegetation, wetlands, wildlife, and fisheries assessments.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to execute projects and meet client expectations.
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments to identify potential effects and mitigation measures.
  • Prepare and contribute to technical reports, including writing, coordinating, and analyzing ecological/environmental datasets.
  • Apply knowledge of applicable municipal, provincial, and federal legislation.
  • Support the preparation of documentation for regulatory applications and permits.
  • Contribute to proposal development, fee estimates, and workplans.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Ecology, Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Management, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of practical experience in environmental consulting.
  • Experience working on Transit projects (Metrolinx, TTC, MTO Class EAs, and Municipal Class EAs is an asset.
  • Understanding of transportation, transit, and municipal infrastructure construction projects gained through practical experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and drawings.
  • Demonstrated sense of urgency with a strong commitment to ensuring client satisfaction, achieving goals, and objectives.
  • Excellent self-management, time management, and organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and multi-task.
  • Familiarity and working knowledge of various environmental permits and approvals.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, team-oriented, and ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat applications, and file sharing systems.
