Job Summary:

Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services Corporation is seeking a highly skilled Staff Attorney to join our team. As a Staff Attorney, you will be responsible for providing high-quality legal services to Nishnawbe-Aski Nation community members and ensuring compliance with relevant reporting and legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide legal services in accordance with the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation Legal mandate, vision, mission, and principles.
  2. Work under the direction of the Director of Legal Services and report to them as required.
  3. Develop and maintain a strong understanding of Indigenous law and justice, as well as the Canadian legal system.
  4. Engage with community members to build trust and rapport, and provide effective verbal and listening communication skills in conflict resolution and nonviolent crisis intervention.
  5. Manage cases and files efficiently, and possess excellent administrative and coordination skills.
  6. Stay up-to-date with relevant legal resources and knowledge of the community's legal landscape.
  7. Collaborate with colleagues to achieve team goals and objectives.

Requirements:

  1. Must be a lawyer, called to the Bar in Ontario, with relevant experience in Criminal law, Family law, and administrative matters.
  2. Must have a membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  3. Excellent case and file management skills, administrative and coordination skills, stress management and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines.
  4. Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport; effective verbal and listening communication skills specifically in conflict resolution and nonviolent crisis intervention; excellent interviewing and counselling skills.
  5. Experience working within the Canadian legal system and knowledge of Indigenous justice issues would be an asset.
  6. Proficient working knowledge of SharePoint/PeopleSoft, MS Office Software, Internet, and general office equipment.
  7. Knowledge of the legal resources in the community for individuals, youth, and families.
  8. Ability to speak the language or knowledge of NAN First Nation languages an asset.
