Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Lawyer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing legal services to our clients, including representation in court and out-of-court negotiations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality legal services to Nishnawbe-Aski Nation community members, including representation in court and out-of-court negotiations.
  • Conduct research and analysis to identify and address legal issues affecting our clients.
  • Develop and implement strategies to address the legal needs of our clients.
  • Collaborate with other legal professionals and community stakeholders to achieve our mission.
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in the law and legal procedures.

Qualifications

  • Must be a lawyer, called to the Bar in Ontario, with relevant experience in Criminal law, Family law, and administrative matters and understanding of Indigenous law and justice.
  • Must have a membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Excellent case and file management skills, administrative and coordination skills, stress management and time management skills, ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport; effective verbal and listening communication skills specifically in conflict resolution and nonviolent crisis intervention; excellent interviewing and counselling skills.
  • Experience working within the Canadian legal system and knowledge of Indigenous justice issues would be an asset.
  • Proficient working knowledge of SharePoint/PeopleSoft, MS Office Software, Internet, and general office equipment.
  • Knowledge of the legal resources in the community for individuals, youth, and families.
  • Ability to speak the language or knowledge of NAN First Nation languages an asset.
