Location: Whitewater Ski Resort

Department: Snow Safety

Reports to: Avalanche Forecasting Supervisor

Employment Status/Type: Seasonal Full-Time, Nov - Apr (weather dependent)

Compensation: $ - $ (DOE) alongside further employee perks and benefits.

Job Summary:

As an Avalanche Forecaster at Whitewater Ski Resort, you will be responsible for monitoring weather and snowpack conditions to create a hazard assessment and implement appropriate avalanche risk management decisions resort-wide. This role requires effective communication of avalanche hazards to staff members and guests through various channels.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide daily avalanche hazard assessments and forecasts.
  • Oversee avalanche control programs resort-wide.
  • Ensure terrain with elevated risk is closed to the public.
  • Provide training and mentorship to employees.
  • Communicate avalanche risk management information to guests and staff.
  • Administer first aid to injured guests and staff.
  • Investigate accidents and near misses.
  • Ensure accurate data recording and reporting.
  • Lead Avalanche Skills Training courses.
  • Assume roles in incident command structures during search and rescue operations.
Requirements:
  • NUEC Level 3 First Aid with advanced protocols or equivalent.
  • Avalanche Operations Level 2 from Canadian Avalanche Association.
  • Work Safe BC Blasting Certificate for Avalanche Control with Hand Charging endorsement.
  • Canadian Avalanche Association Avalanche Professional membership.
  • Minimum three years of avalanche forecasting & explosive control experience.
  • Class 5 British Columbia Drivers License.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain organized and level-headed in emergency situations.
  • Recognizes cause of risk and is familiar with current industry risk control measures.
  • Advanced Skiing Ability.
  • Able to ski with considerable loads and patient toboggans.
  • Able to perform search and rescue activities.
  • Able to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Able to work in early morning hours and for extended periods.
