Job Summary:

The Assistant Avalanche Forecaster plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of staff and guests at Whitewater Ski Resort. Under the guidance of the Avalanche Forecasting Supervisor, this position is responsible for monitoring weather and snowpack conditions to create a hazard assessment and implement appropriate avalanche risk management decisions resort-wide.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Plan, oversee, and implement avalanche control measures and training resort-wide.
  2. Communicate avalanche hazards to staff members and guests effectively through social media updates, public bulletins, and other forms of public outreach.
  3. Assist with managing the avalanche control program resort-wide on a daily basis.
  4. Ensure that avalanche risk within all open terrain is within operational thresholds and that terrain with elevated risk is closed to the public.
  5. Provide training and mentorship to employees.
  6. Provide information to guests and the public with respect to avalanche risk management.
  7. Ensure accurate and timely weather observations are being recorded.
  8. Ensure that adequate snowpack observations are being recorded.
  9. Administer first aid to injured guests and staff.
  10. Transport injured skiers from the mountain to the First Aid room.
  11. Investigate and record accident details according to established procedures.
  12. Investigate any near misses or incidents involving guests or staff and report to the program manager.
  13. Ensure that information regarding closures and terrain restrictions are communicated to all relevant staff and/or the public.
  14. Ensure that accurate data is being recorded locally and reported on the InfoEx.
  15. Ensure that accurate weather data is conveyed to other departments.
  16. Recognize causes of risk, set up and maintain signage, fencing, and boundary markers to minimize skiing hazards.
  17. Follow established working procedures and ensure safe working conditions for himself/herself and the mountain staff.
  18. Lead Avalanche Skills Training Level 1, Companion Rescue, and Managing Avalanche Terrain courses for adults and youth, as well as other staff.
  19. Assume various roles in the incident command structure during avalanche or backcountry search and rescue operations.
  20. Work to achieve department Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to assist in achieving organizational goals.
  21. Promote Whitewater's safety culture by reviewing and amending where necessary.
  22. Embrace and promote Whitewater's mission statement and values.
  23. Maintain current knowledge of legal standards pertaining to equipment, safety regulations, and OHS practices.
  24. Other duties as required.
Required Qualifications/Education:
  1. NUEC Level 3 First Aid with advanced protocols or equivalent.
  2. Avalanche Operations Level 2 From Canadian Avalanche Association.
  3. Work Safe BC Blasting Certificate for Avalanche Control with Hand Charging endorsement.
  4. Canadian Avalanche Association Avalanche Practitioner membership, working towards Avalanche Professional membership.
  5. Minimum two years of avalanche forecasting & explosive control experience.
  6. Class 5 British Columbia Drivers License.
Skills and Abilities:
  1. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  2. Ability to remain organized and level-headed in a variety of emergency situations.
  3. Recognize causes of risk and be familiar with current industry risk control measures.
  4. Advanced Skiing Ability.
  5. Able to ski with considerable loads and patient toboggans.
  6. Able to perform search and rescue activities.
  7. Able to work in extreme weather conditions.
  8. Able to work in early morning hours and for extended periods.
