Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Tissue Recovery Coordinator to join our team at Ontario Health. This casual contract position offers the opportunity to develop expertise in the surgical recovery phase of the tissue donation process.

About the Role

This role is based out of the Sudbury region and involves significant travel around the area and as required anywhere in the province for the surgical recovery of human eyes. The Tissue Recovery Coordinator will typically be scheduled for 12 hour on-call shifts, with additional compensation provided when dispatched to a case.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform the surgical recovery of eye tissue (in-situ/corneal excision and whole globe) from deceased individuals.
  • Package and transport tissues in accordance with TGLN and Health Canada standards using aseptic technique.
  • Assist with the recovery of human heart valves, skin, and muscle-skeletal tissues as required.
  • Coordinate the tissue recovery process, including assessing medical suitability of potential tissue donors in collaboration with members of the TGLN team.
  • Screen, evaluate, package, and transport human tissue, and collect blood and other test samples in accordance with TGLN standards.
  • Perform technical duties in support of the recovery, such as medical chart review, blood draw, and physical examination of the deceased, as well as other technical responsibilities.
  • Work closely with TGLN's Provincial Resource Centre and local healthcare professionals throughout the process to obtain required information and support.
  • Maintain and prepare equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with projects and the development of processes and documentation.
  • Perform quality control functions related to the role.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • A university degree or college diploma in health sciences, nursing (RPN), funeral services, pathology assistant, paramedicine, biological sciences, or a recognized equivalent.
  • Four years' work experience in a health sciences environment specifically in operating room, pathology, paramedicine, funeral services, or clinical laboratory medical setting.
  • Certification in eye or tissue banking, blood banking, or laboratory technology is an asset.
  • Experience in organ and tissue donation, tissue recovery, and/or processing is an asset.
  • A valid class G driver's license without restrictions and access to a reliable vehicle is required.
  • Ability to drive long distances and work a variety of 12-hour shifts, including days, nights, and weekends.
  • Ability to lift parcels up to 35 lbs and move patients with similar forces.
What We Offer

We offer a competitive hourly rate of $33.74 to $42.17 per hour, depending on experience.

This is a casual contract position, with a duration of 12 months. All applicants must be residents of Ontario to be considered for roles at Ontario Health.
