Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Anesthesia Assistant Trainee to join our team at Fraser Health. As an integral member of the surgical team, you will provide technical support and clinical assistance with induction, maintenance, and emergence of anesthesia under direct clinical supervision of the Anesthesiologist.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of patients for surgery and ensure patient comfort by providing psycho-social support pre-operatively and during the induction phase of anesthesia.
  • Assist with pre and post-operative assessment of patients by performing an anesthetic risk and airway assessment and determining the general physical status of the patient.
  • Advise the Anesthesiologist of the patient's status and assist in preparing, testing, and maintaining the integrity of equipment for use in anesthesia.
  • Identify malfunctions, carry out minor maintenance, and liaise with Biomedical Engineering and/or vendor(s) to maintain optimal performance of equipment.
  • Assist with the induction of anesthesia, including managing airway, establishing ventilation, and procuring intravenous and arterial lines.
  • Assist the Anesthesiologist with regional blockade via ultrasound, peripheral nerve stimulation, x-ray, and/or a combination.
  • Monitor patients' physiological response to procedural stimulation/medication and administer prescribed pharmacological agents under the direction of the Anesthesiologist.
  • Initiate mechanical ventilation and titrate the anesthetic according to care plan to ensure optimal maintenance of anesthesia.
  • Assist with the documentation of patient data on the Anesthesia Record and assist with patient emergence from anesthesia.
  • Assist the Anesthesiologist in transporting patients to the recovery room or other designated area and assist with patient transfer in and out of the Operating Room.
  • Respond and assist with intraoperative crises, such as cardiac arrest and malignant hyperthermia response, within the perioperative units.
Qualifications

We require a graduate from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with one year of experience in an acute care hospital environment or equivalent. Active enrolment in the Thompson River's University (TRU) Anesthesia Assistant post-diploma program is also required.

Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to assess client responses to care and respond appropriately. They will also be able to adjust to new or unexpected events and work independently and in collaboration with others as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
