Part Time Infant and Child Development Worker

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada The Salvation Army Full time

The Salvation Army is seeking a Part Time Infant and Child Development Worker to join our team at the Bethany Hope Centre. The successful candidate will be responsible for the care of the children who visit the centre, assisting in the planning and delivery of childcare programs within the applicable legal, financial and safety framework.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Planning, implementation and evaluation of appropriate age-based activities to promote social interaction and personal development
  • Supporting the scheduling of childcare spots and interacting with parents regarding space available
  • Providing ongoing feedback and engagement with parents on child development and behavior
  • Maintaining confidentiality and recording information in the database as per policy and protocol
  • Supporting parent/child intakes and child development assessments as required
  • Role modeling appropriate behaviors and attitudes to support growth and promote change for the child and family
  • Participating in ongoing training in trauma and infant/child mental health
  • Providing emergency first aid and completing reports and files as required
  • Preparing healthy snacks and maintaining facility cleanliness and tidiness
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:

  • This is a permanent part-time position working 24 hours per week
  • Typical working conditions are in a childcare room and an office for administrative work
  • The job requires lifting/moving equipment and children, and room set-up, active involvement with children for most of the day, occasional computer work, cleaning the facility and putting up wall displays
  • No travel is required for this position

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • The successful candidate will have completed high school, plus at least a specialized course in Early Childhood Education Assistant, or equivalent
  • Registered Early Childhood Education Assistant or registered with an equivalent association
  • Certificate in Infant/Child Mental Health is an asset
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification within 2 years
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered

Experience and Knowledge:

  • More than three months prior related experience, including experience in a childcare environment
  • Trauma-informed and infant/child mental health and Brain Story training is an asset

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Attentive listening, preparing materials, crafts, program planning
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada
