About the Role

The City of St. Catharines is seeking a Financial Analyst Co-op Student to join our team in the Financial Management Services Department. As a key member of our Accounting Team and Budget Office Team, you will be responsible for supporting accounting functions, developing and analyzing budgets, conducting financial forecasts, and assisting with new financial system implementation.

This co-op opportunity provides an excellent learning experience for students pursuing a career in finance, accounting, or public administration within a municipal setting. You will work closely with our experienced team to gain hands-on experience in financial analysis, budgeting, and financial management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with account payables and month/quarter end closing process.
  • Collaborate with the Budget Office Team and City Departments to understand budgetary needs, provide financial insights, and foster collaboration in the budget planning process.
  • Gather data, review financial performance reports, provide financial analysis, and support the development and monitoring of the annual municipal budget process.
  • Participate in cost-benefit analysis for proposed projects, programs, and initiatives to evaluate their financial viability and potential impact on the City's budget.
  • Assist system implementation team on user acceptance testing, data conversion and input, report designs, and internal training/education.
  • Propose and participate in initiatives to enhance budgeting and financial analysis processes, streamlining workflows, and increasing efficiency.

Requirements:

  • CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN AN UNDERGRADUATE OR GRADUATE PROGRAM IN FINANCE, ACCOUNTING, PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, OR A RELATED FIELD.
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in financial analysis techniques and tools.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with an ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment.
  • A demonstrated commitment to enhancing a safety culture.
