Position Overview
We are thrilled to expand our Sandbox Mutual Insurance family and are currently seeking to fill a full-time, permanent Underwriter I – III (Personal Lines) role. Reporting directly to the Underwriting Supervisor, the successful candidate will be tasked with the assessment, evaluation, and processing of new business, renewals, and routine revisions across various insurance lines.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate applications, renewals, and modifications to existing policies to assess the nature and extent of risk. Gather additional information as necessary.
- Decide on the acceptability of risks, whether they are acceptable with conditions, or should be declined, based on a thorough analysis of all relevant information within the authority limits of this role. Any risks deemed unsuitable must be escalated to a senior underwriter.
- Identify actions needed to mitigate risk and suggest coverage restrictions or adjustments to deductibles or premiums based on risk analysis.
- Calculate appropriate rates, apply relevant discounts and surcharges, and determine premiums.
- Manage the processing of new applications, renewals, revisions, cancellations, and quotes.
- Respond to inquiries both verbally and in writing, serving as a technical resource for brokers, clients, and colleagues regarding policy exclusions, terms, coverages, and premiums.
- Draft correspondence to request information and clarify underwriting requirements and decisions.
- Provide training and support to clerical staff.
- Conduct quality control assessments.
- Verify the accuracy of information systems, including updates.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12 education.
- Successful completion of at least one Insurance Institute Course, with a commitment to obtaining the CIP designation by completing two Institute courses annually.
- A minimum of one year of relevant insurance experience.
- Understanding of policy rating and associated underwriting practices.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to lead, motivate, and train fellow employees.
- Capability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Proficient in dealing courteously and positively with the public and brokers.
