Job Summary:

CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking a highly skilled National Assignment Editor to join our team. As a key member of our newsroom, you will be responsible for coordinating the work of reporters assigned to cover regional, national, or international news for our various platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Consult with reporters and network colleagues to determine priority coverage of regional, national, and international news.
  • Encourage reporters to develop their own story ideas and maintain a short-, medium-, and long-term planning calendar in conjunction with the Information Network.
  • Assign stories to reporters and coordinate their work, providing guidance on story angles and additional documentation as needed.
  • Assess the feasibility of producers' and lineup editors' requests, based on production imperatives.
  • Review and vet reporters' items and live hits before they air.
  • Follow up with reporters and assignment editors, providing feedback on their work.
  • Ensure that items under your responsibility are ready on time for various newscasts.
  • Coordinate the work of a researcher, if applicable.
  • Perform duties of reporter and national lineup editor, as needed.
  • Vet and edit reporters' copy, as needed.
  • Verify information aired to ensure it is true and accurate, in accordance with corporate standards and policies.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Seven (7) years' journalism experience or equivalent.
  • Extensive general knowledge, in-depth knowledge of Quebec, national, and international affairs, newsroom logistics, and digital news production cycle.
  • Solid understanding of various platforms, superior French-language skills, and proficiency in English.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, independently, and as part of a team.
  • Ability to analyze, synthesize, and think critically about complex issues.
  • Ability to take initiative and be flexible.
  • Familiarity with and understanding of CBC/Radio-Canada's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
