Job Summary

We are seeking highly motivated and dedicated nursing students to join our team as Clinical Externs in Geriatric Care at Baycrest Health Sciences.

Job Description

As a Clinical Extern, you will have the opportunity to work under the supervision of our experienced nursing staff in a dynamic and supportive environment. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Participating in patient assessments and activities of daily living
  • Contributing to care planning and evaluation
  • Providing assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting, and ambulating as per hospital policy
  • Ensuring skin integrity and reducing pressure injuries
  • Assisting with comfort measures and patient safety by maintaining a clean and tidy environment
  • Communicating care through documentation and reporting
  • Engaging in additional skills via delegation as approved by unit leadership
  • Providing assigned care under supervision, where you have the knowledge, skill, and judgment to do so safely, excluding controlled acts
  • Supporting patients' independence, dignity, social, emotional, and cultural well-being
  • Initiating and maintaining relationships with patients, their families, and other care providers
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

  • Nursing students enrolled in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of a CNO-approved baccalaureate program or 2nd year of a diploma nursing program
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
  • Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support
  • Demonstrated infection prevention and control practices
  • Students who have successfully completed a recent clinical placement preferred
  • Ability to work independently and as part of the interdisciplinary team, and recognize when to escalate challenging situations
  • Experience working with clients with cognitive impairment/dementia and experience working with clients who exhibit high-intensity responsive behaviors preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Basic computer skills – Meditech, Microsoft Word, and Excel preferred
