Position Overview

JOB POSTING #REF690P - Clinical Extern (Nursing) - TG/TW

Union: Non-Union
Site: Toronto General Hospital/Toronto Western Hospital
Department: Various
Hours: Various; must be available for a minimum number of hours per week
Salary: Competitive hourly rate
Status: Temporary Part-Time (Contractual position)

The Clinical Extern will engage as part of a collaborative team, functioning as an unregulated healthcare provider. Under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a Registered Health Professional, Clinical Externs will contribute to patient care within the healthcare environment.

UHN is actively seeking applications from Nursing Students for the Extern program.

Externs will be contracted to work part-time hours, with the potential to reach full-time hours based on unit requirements. Scheduling will be determined by unit needs and may include day, evening, night, and weekend shifts.

Key responsibilities of the Clinical Extern include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborating with point-of-care nurses to assess patient care requirements
  • Serving as a resource for the interprofessional team in relation to patient care tasks, supplies, equipment, and transportation
  • Assisting with personal hygiene, patient positioning, and transfers
  • Supporting patient ambulation, toileting, and meal assistance, including feeding
  • Facilitating communication between patients and their families
  • Performing additional duties as assigned to enhance team support

Qualifications

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Nursing Externs must meet the following criteria:

  • Enrollment as a Nursing Student in a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program, or in the final year of a Practical Nursing (PN) program
  • Availability for a minimum number of hours per week, with flexible scheduling
  • Compliance with vaccination requirements (COVID-19 and others) unless exempt for medical reasons
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is mandatory
