Job Summary

Fraser Health is seeking a highly skilled Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse to join our team in providing exceptional care to children and adolescents with mental health and psychiatric needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for assigned patients, identifying actual or potential problems and strengths through nursing diagnosis.
  • Provide clinical leadership in evidence-based practices, including nursing assessments, crisis intervention, patient and family education, and health promotion activities.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional care team to provide person-centered and recovery-oriented care, promoting autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity, and access to information for patients and families.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and research, identifying patient care issues and collecting data to inform practice.
  • Act as an advocate for patients' rights, promoting their well-being and safety in a therapeutic environment.
  • Develop and maintain clinical competency through ongoing education and training, staying up-to-date with best practices in child and adolescent mental health and psychiatric care.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing.
  • One year of recent related experience in an acute psychiatric setting, with experience working with child or adolescent populations.
  • Specialty training in child and/or adolescent psychiatry, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing mental health and substance use client assessments and provide nursing care through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety-type interventions, including crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of mental illness and substance use treatment, psychopharmacology, child and adolescent development, and mental health/psychiatric issues.
  • Counselling and group facilitation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with patients, families/caregivers, the public, medical staff, and members of the interprofessional care team.
  • Ability to promote person-centered care, demonstrating empathy for patients/families/caregivers, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, and advocacy for special populations.
  • Ability to work effectively with children and/or adolescents with mental health/psychiatric issues, educate patients and families/caregivers about topics essential to their health care and well-being, and organize and prioritize work.
