The Opportunity

  • Pillar: Transmission & Distribution Technologies (TDT)
  • Department: Line Asset Management (LAM)
  • Location: On-site at 800 Kipling Avenue, Toronto

The LAM department offers a range of 3rd party mechanical testing services for electric utilities, including the testing of new products and aged components. Our testing products include overhead phase conductors, fiber optic cables, hardware, and specialized studies in areas such as wind-induced conductor motion and ice loading.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Support with sample preparation, test setup, and execution of tests
  2. Carry out hands-on technical work in the laboratory under supervision of senior technologists
  3. Assist technologists and engineers in carrying out mechanical/electrical evaluation of overhead conductors, fiber optics, etc.
  4. Complete test logsheets and other records in accordance with Kinectrics' ISO 9001/17025 quality program
  5. Provide verbal updates to laboratory supervisor and project managers on testing status
  6. Support with computer-aided design of test fixtures/jigs using Solidworks on a limited basis
  7. Keep a clean work environment and practice good housekeeping in an industrial setting
  8. Perform all duties in a safe manner in compliance with Kinectrics policies and procedures

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled full-time in a post-secondary Mechanical/Electrical Engineering Program requiring a co-op placement
  • Experience with hand tools (e.g. drill, hammer, grinder, etc.) is required
  • Must be able to perform moderate physical tasks, physically fit: ability to move/lift items up to 40-50 lbs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work co-operatively with a variety of staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team situation and high level of initiative
  • Basic computer skills are required (e.g. Microsoft Office, Solidworks/AutoCAD)
  • Familiarity with data acquisition programs (e.g. LabView) or measuring instruments (e.g. calipers, LVDTs) is an asset

Kinectrics' safety policies and procedures must be adhered to at all times. In order to perform your work safely, you may be required to wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, safety glasses, electric-shock and sole puncture protective foot gear with protective toecap, shock-resistant gloves, a fall restraint harness, face respirator, and a hard hat.
