Position Title: Bio-Cementation Scientist 1 (NOC 21110)

About the Role:
  • Lead laboratory technical personnel, medical clinical staff, graduate students, research scientists, and other professionals in achieving project goals.
  • Collaborate in commercializing new products by applying experimental design principles and expert knowledge in Biocementation.
  • Design and oversee the execution of technical projects using biotechnological techniques.
  • Perform advanced experiments using enzymatically or microbially induced calcite precipitation (E/MICP) in various geological materials.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Conduct primary research focused on pellet and briquette formation for the mining industry.
  2. Pursue secondary objectives such as mine tailing stabilization, dry stacking, and dust control.
  3. Isolate organisms producing urease or other carbonate-forming enzymes or pathways.
  4. Apply bioaugmentation and/or biostimulation techniques to enhance organism activity in various geological materials.
  5. Maintain expertise in X-ray fluorescence (XRF), UCS-Instron, Falcon, and Needle penetration techniques.
  6. Organize conferences and meetings to advance project goals.
  7. Develop clear communication channels with the team and stakeholders regarding progress and experiment outcomes.
  8. Manage multiple laboratory projects simultaneously while ensuring timely completion of key milestones.
  9. Collaborate with cross-functional teams on projects including bioinformatics and analytical characterization.
  10. Demonstrate excellent written communication skills for findings and reports.
  11. Present research at 1-2 technical conferences annually.
  12. Collect and prepare samples for laboratory analysis.
  13. Participate in technology transfer from Allonnia to deployment partners.
  14. Maintain accurate records of executed work and activities according to Standard Operating Procedures.
  15. Ensure safe work practices and effective lab policies through regular equipment maintenance.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • A minimum of one year's experience in experimental design for bio-cementation, MICP, or EICP.
  • At least three years' experience in theoretical Biotechnology for Resource Engineering, data management, and accuracy.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects to success.
  • Oversight and Coordination skills with strong interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to identify risks and formulate contingency plans promptly.
  • Familiarity with non-destructive tests (UCS-Instron, Falcon, Needle penetration).
  • Practical experience with advanced microbial techniques (microbial culture, isolation, purification, storage, etc.).
  • Gel electrophoresis (SDS-Native PAGE), and FTIR/ICP analysis.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
