Teaching Faculty Position Summary

North Island College invites applications from qualified instructors to teach in the Natural Resources program. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality instructional content to students in a variety of formats, including face-to-face and online.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver learning materials for instructional environments
  • Use a variety of approaches and materials to address different learning needs
  • Teach in assigned subject areas and include all required subject matter or skill activity in courses and course outlines
  • Direct student learning in a positive, supportive, and caring environment
  • Be available to students regularly during scheduled office hours and classroom hours to discuss their progress and other issues that influence their learning
  • Clearly communicate learning outcomes for programs and courses, and the way in which learners will be evaluated against those outcomes
  • Design and conduct evaluations or appraisals of students, and keep students informed of their progress
  • Submit grades in a timely manner, in accordance with College policies
  • Maintain records of student enrollment and achievement, and other records required by the College and affiliated agencies

Typical Professional Duties

  • Be aware of, and work within, College educational policies
  • Be aware of the Education and Strategic plans, and contribute to their development and assist in the achievement of its goals and objectives
  • Advise the Department Chair regarding items that need to be ordered so that inventories of books, supplies, and equipment are adequate for the courses taught
  • Advise the Department Chair regarding enrollment management (recruitment and retention) strategies for their areas of responsibility
  • Assist in rectifying health and safety concerns, and participate in department meetings and other department activities during normal working hours, when possible
  • Participate actively as a contributing member of the College community on College committees and other College-wide activities, where appropriate

Required Education and Experience

  • Forest professional or related/allied discipline and minimum of three years industry experience required
  • A master's degree in education, forestry, environmental studies, or a related field
  • Curriculum development experience
  • One year teaching experience in a post-secondary setting
  • BC Instructors Diploma or BC Teaching Certificate is preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with all aspects of course instruction, including facilitation of theoretical and applied learning, coordination of field trips, engaging with industry, and coordination of instructional resources
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with a variety of instructional aids, computer applications, learning technologies, and digital tools
  • Demonstrated pedagogical approaches to stimulate and empower learners
  • Experience with the efficient use of advanced instructional technologies of relevance to face-to-face and online instruction
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with demonstrated ability to plan and prioritize, and efficiently meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and co-operatively in campus-based and online team environments, and with students, industry, funders, employers, and staff
