CASA Mental Health Classrooms is a new model for school-based mental health service addressing the need for services closer to students by bridging their mental health and school needs through a coordinated approach by a mental health team and a teacher. This role follows the school year schedule, running from August to June.

The Mental Health Nurse will work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to provide and coordinate services such as nursing assessments, plans of care, medication administration, teaching, telephone follow-up, and health promotion. They will complete appropriate nursing assessments (physical and psychosocial) to identify mental health concerns and current risks, incorporating objective findings like laboratory results and diagnostic reports, and integrating assessment data to establish long and short-term goals, providing interventions to promote health.

Key responsibilities include monitoring and evaluating nursing care plans based on effectiveness of interventions, modifying plans as needed, providing information and instructions to assist others in understanding clinical conditions, ongoing care, and management, and assisting with individual or group therapy. The Mental Health Nurse will also liaise with other professionals to promote continuity of care and assist families with connecting to primary care physicians, act as a resource by providing training to team members, and participate in the development of children's mental health teaching materials.

Required Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in nursing, a minimum of three to five years of recent pediatric experience in an ambulatory care setting including the care and management of children with mental health problems, and membership in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta. Knowledge of electronic medical records and confidentiality requirements is also necessary.
