Job Summary

The Vancouver Airport Authority is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Archaeology Lead to join our team. As a key member of our Climate and Environment department, you will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of our archaeological programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and protecting cultural resources.

Key Responsibilities
  • Archaeological Program Development: Develop and implement the airport's archaeological program, outlining objectives and timelines, and ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements.
  • Cultural Resource Planning: Provide expert professional advice and direction in archaeological resource planning and management for all development activities on Sea Island, ensuring the protection of cultural resources and sustainable growth.
  • Fieldwork and Assessments: Conduct audits, such as field inspections, assessments of areas, and excavations of archaeological sites, particularly at the outset of projects or in the event of unexpected discoveries.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including coordination with Musqueam Indian Band and local stakeholder groups, and representation of the Airport Authority at public meetings and conferences.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise 1-2 staff or students assisting on program support, and several professional consultants at a time, providing guidance and direction as needed.
Requirements
  • Education: Completion of a University Degree in Archaeology or Anthropology with a specialization in archeology, plus registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Archaeologist.
  • Experience: A minimum of 8-10 years' related experience in archaeological, environmental resource management, preferably related to infrastructure, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, along with at least 2 years of project or operations management experience.
  • Indigenous Community Experience: Proven experience working with xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) or other Indigenous communities.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Experience liaising with regulatory bodies, with a thorough understanding of pertinent legislation and legal frameworks applicable to federal crown-held lands, ensuring all archaeological activities are compliant.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written/verbal communication and presentation skills, along with strong conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation skills.
