First Student Shared Services is a leading provider of school transportation services, operating in 460 locations across the US and Canada. We work with school districts to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation for five million students per school day.
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Shop Manager to oversee all location maintenance operations and provide shop staff oversight. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing efficient maintenance performance, ensuring safe working conditions of the fleet, and supervising shop staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Schedule and administer fleet maintenance, troubleshoot problems with equipment, and communicate availability of vehicles for service with dispatch and other operations personnel.
- Directly supervise shop staff, including hiring, firing, approving salary increases or decreases, training and employee development, planning and directing work, disciplining, handling employee complaints or grievances, and handling performance reviews.
- Work closely with the location manager and region maintenance management to provide status of maintenance and budget requirements, review financial and budget variances, review repair orders or code, and approve account payable documents.
- Ensure compliance with State, Federal, and Company requirements, maintain a safe environment, and ensure all maintenance and related activities are in conformance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Review repair orders, order fuel for vehicles, order parts, and subcontract repair work.
- Initiate and implement projects that improve efficiency and/or reduce operating costs.
- Ensure maintenance technicians are trained on current operating procedures, are properly equipped, and motivated to accomplish the maintenance program in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner.
- Supervise bus fueling and arrange services for building and ground keeping.
- Complete special projects as assigned and perform hands-on work activities.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Technical training preferred.
- Possess CDL Operator's license with required endorsements.
- 5+ years of hands-on mechanical supervisory experience.
- May require lifting of 20 to 50 lbs.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Computer skills.
- Industry experience repairing and maintaining diesel engines and school bus equipment is preferred.
