Strategic Academic Press Director

The University of British Columbia is seeking a highly experienced and visionary leader to serve as the Director of UBC Press. This is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, operations, and publishing activities of the press.
About the RoleThe Director will be responsible for ensuring that UBC Press maintains its reputation as a leading publisher of high-quality scholarly works, while also driving innovation and growth in the digital landscape. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of leadership and management experience, with a deep understanding of the academic publishing industry.
The Director will lead a team of professionals responsible for editorial, production, marketing, and business development activities, and will work closely with the University's research community, authors, and other stakeholders to promote the work of UBC Press.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a strategic plan for UBC Press, aligned with the University's research priorities and goals;
- Lead the editorial team in the selection and publication of high-quality scholarly works;
- Oversee the production, marketing, and distribution of publications, including print and digital formats;
- Build and maintain relationships with authors, researchers, and other stakeholders to promote the work of UBC Press;
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of the academic publishing industry, including trends, best practices, and emerging technologies;
- Ensure that UBC Press operates in a financially sustainable manner, with a focus on achieving revenue growth and improving efficiency;
- Collaborate with the University's research community, departments, and faculties to identify new opportunities for scholarly publishing and dissemination;
- Provide strategic guidance and support to the UBC Press Publications Board and other stakeholders;
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A Master's or Ph.D. degree in a relevant field, such as literature, history, sociology, or a related discipline;
- At least 10 years of experience in academic publishing, with a minimum of 3 years in a senior leadership role;
- Demonstrated expertise in leadership, management, and strategic planning, with a proven track record of success in driving organizational change and improvement;
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and diplomatic skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders;
- A deep understanding of the academic publishing industry, including trends, best practices, and emerging technologies;
- Experience with budgeting, financial management, and fundraising, with a focus on achieving revenue growth and improving efficiency;
- Familiarity with digital publishing platforms, tools, and technologies, with a willingness to experiment and innovate;
- A commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation, with a demonstrated understanding of the importance of these values in academic publishing;
The salary range for this position is approximately $140,000 - $180,000 per annum, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The University of British Columbia offers a comprehensive benefits package, including extended health and dental coverage, pension plan, and generous vacation time.
