Job Title: Director, Centre for Applied Artificial Intelligence

At Sheridan College, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead our Centre for Applied Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) as its Director. The successful candidate will be responsible for advancing CAAI's reputation and evolution as a leading research and innovation centre supporting the application of artificial intelligence across all sectors.

About the Role

The Director will report to the Dean, Innovation and provide strategic and operational leadership for the direction of CAAI and its suite of innovation supports for industry and community partners. This includes establishing and developing partnerships and revenue generation to ensure CAAI's financial viability, as well as managing research and operational staff and CAAI's facilities and advanced technologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership for CAAI based on advanced understanding of global innovation occurring within the application of Artificial Intelligence technologies and workflows across diverse industry sectors.
  • Guide the Centre's operations, with particular responsibility and accountability for the financial viability of CAAI through revenue generation from grants and contracts for applied research, training and other innovation supports.
  • Steward CAAI's external partnerships and business development, cultivating applied research, training and other innovation support partnerships with industry and community partners, funding agencies, and other academic institutions.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the CAAI team, optimizing team performance and professional capacity through effective recruiting, workflow/project planning, faculty and student mentorship, and employee development and performance management.
  • Actively engage with other research and entrepreneurship centres at Sheridan, the Faculties, and Sheridan's Generator Support Office in order to grow Sheridan's innovation ecosystem and more fully meet the needs of our partners and communities.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree in Computer Science/Information Technology, software engineering, or other related field, with 7 years of significant work experience in a related, relevant area of focus. They will have deep knowledge of artificial intelligence and broad and in-depth knowledge of current and emerging trends in its application across multiple sectors.

The candidate will also have capacity to develop and execute research projects and demonstrated experience in a research and development environment, business and partnership development experience, grant writing and administration experience, experience addressing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion within organizational development as well as in meeting community needs through partnerships and projects, and experience with financial budgeting, management and reporting.

They will also have thorough knowledge of research funding landscape in Ontario and Canada.
