Ottawa Public Library (OPL) serves the diverse communities of the City of Ottawa, providing accessible and innovative library services that cater to their unique needs. Our mission is to deliver citizen-centric services through various channels and platforms.


Job Summary


The Public Service units at OPL are responsible for delivering customer-focused public library activities, programs, and services across 33 branches, mobile, and digital platforms. As a Public Service Assistant, you will be part of a team that provides essential services to our patrons.


Your Key Responsibilities



  • Provide information, reference, and readers' advisory services in libraries, community centers, and other locations;
  • Offer circulation and page services, including registration, collecting fees, and responding to inquiries;
  • Maintain routine collection duties and promote library services;
  • Exercise responsibility for day-to-day branch operations as needed.

Required Skills and Qualifications


To excel in this role, you will need:



  • A 2-year college diploma in Library and Information Technician or a related field;
  • At least one year of experience in a related field;
  • Strong knowledge of adult and children's literature, reference resources, and electronic databases;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Familiarity with technology, including Microsoft Windows and office software;
  • Physical ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform manual tasks.

Benefits and Compensation


We offer a competitive salary range of $32.509 to $38.035 per hour, commensurate with your experience and qualifications. This position requires bilingualism (English/French) or fluency in one official language (English or French). A Vulnerable Sector Check is also required.
