Qualifications and Requirements

Island Health is seeking a qualified Mental Health Crisis Nurse to join our team. To be successful in this role, you will require registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant or a practicing RPN registrant. Additionally, you will need to possess competencies as outlined in the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice (2nd Edition). A minimum of two years recent experience working with a multi-disciplinary team with children and youth with acute mental illness is required, with crisis or emergency mental health experience being an asset. Recent training in Non Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or equivalent and current CPR certification are also necessary. Canadian Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse (Certificate) (CPMHN{C}) certification is an asset.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct age-appropriate psychiatric assessments, including risk to self/others and mental status.
  • Work with a working knowledge of DSM IV diagnoses, including substance use concerns and related treatments.
  • Develop and implement effective suicide prevention and crisis intervention strategies.
  • Utilize de-escalation skills to manage hostile/aggressive clients.
  • Work effectively and efficiently under pressure in high-acuity situations.
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with clients and their families.
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts, including co-workers, physicians, community agency representatives, patients/clients, and families/significant others.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to achieve shared goals.
  • Apply effective and respectful communication skills, including active-listening, problem-solving, respectful limit setting, and reframing.
  • Communicate effectively in writing.
  • Organize workload and set priorities to ensure efficient delivery of services.
  • Meet the physical demands of the position and possess typing and computer skills sufficient to enter reports efficiently on an electronic health record.
