Train Conductor

CN Rail is seeking a highly skilled and safety-minded individual to join our team as a Train Conductor. This is a full-time, permanent position that offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package.
Job Summary:As a Train Conductor, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of trains, rail cars, and locomotives in rail yards and on the road. You will coordinate the assembly of trains, execute ground work outside the locomotive cab, and perform duties associated with the movement of trains.
Key Responsibilities:- Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, railroad rules and regulations related to safety and operations
- Provide and receive various forms of oral and printed instructions concerning the movement and placement of rail cars
- Assemble/dismantle trains in the rail yard, and pick up/set off rail cars en-route
- Observe, interpret, and relay signals to ensure safe train and locomotive movement
- Operate track switches to change locomotive and rail car routes
- Inspect the condition of a train and equipment
- Make effective decisions when in unfamiliar locations or emergency situations
- Communicate effectively with the Rail Traffic Control centre, other train crews and other departments on a regular basis via handheld radio
Successful applicants will participate in an intensive paid training program that includes 11 weeks of training (7 weeks classroom at the CN Campus in Winnipeg, MB and 4 weeks field training). CN now offers an enhanced and extremely competitive training wage. Expenses related to transportation, accommodation and meals while in Winnipeg are covered by the company.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:- Working a flexible schedule with regular and predictable attendance, in line with the 24/7 railroading environment (includes night, weekend, holiday work hours, some overtime, and being away from home for extended periods of time)
- Pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying up to 90 pounds
- Working outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions
- Operating various devices on rail cars and locomotives, such as uncoupling levers and handbrakes
- Climbing on and off ladders of moving rail cars
- Grasping and holding objects while riding the side of a train
- Walking for frequent extended periods
- Bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling frequently
- Meeting medical fitness requirements for the position, including those established by the Railway Association of Canada, such as the ability to recognize and distinguish between the colors of signals
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Obtaining and maintaining Conductors Rule Card
- Possessing and maintaining a passport allowing entry/re-entry to the Canada and the United States (in certain specific locations)
- Proficiency in both oral and written communications
- Completion of college or vocational/technical school and/or Freight Conductor experience
- Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory/safety environment
- Possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license

- Training wage is $1180/week for approximately the first 6 months. Once qualified, Train Conductors, as per the collective agreement, can earn approximately $75 000 per year (based on 40 hours/week). Wages can vary based on the yard and/or road assignments an employee is assigned.

The following conditions will only be applicable to newly hired employees upon successful completion of their training period in their assigned location for a period of three (3) years:
- Accommodation will be provided for a period of up to three (3) months at a CN Bunkhouse or Hotel of CN's choosing.
- Upon completion of the probationary period, a $5,000 allowance will be given to assist with expenses of relocating.
- Upon completion of twelve (12) months of employment as a qualified Conductor, a $5,000 allowance will be given.
Additionally, newly hired employees who relocate under the provisions of this incentive will be entitled to special lump sum allowances as follows:
- After the completion of 365 days from the date they commenced working at the new location, the employee will receive 7% of their earnings (working tours) paid as a lump sum. Earnings will be calculated from the date they commenced working up to and including the 365th day.
- After the completion of 730 days from the date they commenced working at the new location, the employee will receive 10% of their earnings (working tours) paid as a lump sum. Earnings will be calculated from the 366th day, up to and including the 730th day.
- After the completion of 1095 days from the date they commenced working at the new location, the employee will receive 20% of their earnings (working tours) paid as a lump sum. Earnings will be calculated from the 731st day, up to and including the 1095th day.
