At Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, we are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our Laboratory Services team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing laboratory procedures for histology functions and grossing, microtomy, embedding, staining, and ensuring the completion of assigned workload.

Responsibilities:

  • Performing laboratory procedures for histology functions and grossing, microtomy, embedding, staining, and ensuring the completion of assigned workload
  • Performing all basic clinical Laboratory procedures, including: selecting particles, concentrating, and filtering, smearing, mounting, staining, cover slipping, all within defined limits of accuracy
  • Screens each cytology slide and records all findings for review by Pathologist
  • Operating, troubleshooting, maintenance and cleanliness of laboratory equipment and work area
  • Participating in teaching, educational, safety and quality improvement programs
  • Observing and understanding hospital and departmental policies and procedures
  • Adhering to hospital and departmental mission and vision statements while maintaining patient confidentiality
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality
  • Adhering to the Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) requirements
  • Performing cross-functional duties, as assigned or requested
  • Performing other duties related to and consistent with the job classification, as required
  • Performs all procedures using Standard Precautions
  • Collate statistical information pertinent to the area of responsibility
  • Maintains up-to-date cytology technical procedure manual in compliance with IQMH guidelines
  • Assists in the instruction of students and new employees
  • Performs other assigned duties within the laboratory to the extent allowed by pertinent legislation of regulatory bodies
  • Records, reviews and reports test results accurately and in a timely manner
  • Demonstrated team leadership and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team approach and to adhere to accepted standards of personal conduct
  • Demonstrated evidence of high standards in all aspects of communication
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining / enhancing professional competence through participation in appropriate continuing education activities
  • Strong organizational skills
  • General good health and a level of fitness appropriate for the demands of the position
