Housing Worker Job Description

The Salvation Army is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Housing Worker to join our team. As a Housing Worker, you will play a vital role in providing direct support to clients in obtaining and maintaining suitable housing, enabling them to realize their goals around independent living and providing support and advocacy as needed.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide excellent customer service to clients, ensuring their needs are met and exceeded.
  • Collaborate with clients to identify and access available housing options, providing guidance and information to facilitate successful housing outcomes.
  • Build and maintain relationships with housing operators to compile, maintain, and post a list of potential housing options for clients.
  • Update the Housing Registry to include new housing options, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Make regular contact with housing operators to explore possible vacancies and negotiate on behalf of clients as needed.
  • Coach and support clients to access appropriate services, including case management, system navigation, and crisis intervention.
  • Participate in CTI meetings and contribute to the development and facilitation of housing orientation sessions and other relevant workshops.
  • Provide mentoring and modeling as part of social and life skills education, promoting positive relationships and outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in SMIS, ensuring compliance with organizational standards.
  • Prepare monthly reports and ensure the Housing Help Database is up-to-date for clients in the program.
  • Support the Program Service Manager as a backup for the Community Follow-Up Worker, ensuring seamless service delivery.
  • Participate fully and constructively in staff meetings and in-service training, staying informed and engaged with organizational initiatives.
Working Conditions:
  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
  • Work is performed in an emergency housing facility, subject to high client levels of stress and crisis intervention will be required.
  • Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, bodily waste, drugs and alcohol, noise, dealing with angry and abusive people, verbal abuse, and odours.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • Community College diploma in Social Services field.
  • Certificate in First Aid/CPR, Crisis Intervention, and Conflict Resolution.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and a current copy of a Driver's abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Knowledge:
  • Good knowledge of community resources.
  • One to three years of prior related experience, including frontline casework experience in a social service environment.
  • Previous experience providing individual support to people living in poverty, dealing with mental health issues, addictions, social isolation, and/or homelessness.
  • Knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act.
Skills and Capabilities:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (computer skills essential).
  • Well-developed skills and ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to constructively give and receive feedback.
  • Highly developed understanding of and proven ability to communicate appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to social justice issues, equity issues, anti-racism, anti-discrimination, and anti-oppression.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
