Compliance and Risk Management Expert

Cowan Insurance Group, a proud Canadian-owned company with a history dating back to 1927, is seeking an experienced Director of Compliance and Quality Assurance. This role plays a pivotal part in ensuring the company adheres to legal, regulatory, and standards compliance requirements.
As a key member of our team, you will maintain an enterprise risk management program and collaborate with business leaders to ensure its effective implementation. Your primary responsibility will be to identify, assess, strategize, and monitor known and emerging risks, thereby safeguarding the company's reputation and operations.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain internal company policies aligned with relevant laws and regulations, ensuring seamless compliance.
- Audit business contracts to guarantee they are compliant, and accurately record all necessary information.
- Regularly assess company operations to pinpoint potential compliance risks, evaluating processes, practices, and documents for possible weaknesses or areas of concern.
- Oversee business audits to identify potential non-compliance situations, taking corrective measures as needed.
- Foster employee awareness of their responsibilities in complying with both internal and external laws and regulations.
- Support information security programs and initiatives, including the SOC 2 security program.
- Evaluate and implement regulatory and legislative changes across relevant business functions.
- Ensure adherence to privacy laws and regulations.
- Monitor and assess E&O potential claims and other claims, ensuring prompt resolution.
- Establish and maintain business continuity plans and programs, including disaster recovery and cyber response plans.
- Verify that all corporate and individual licensing is current and valid.
- Provide regular reports on overall business compliance programs.
This role requires close collaboration with the Senior Business Auditor and QA team members in various business functions.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field such as business administration, finance, law, or a related discipline.
- No less than 10 years of experience in risk management, preferably in a financial services or insurance setting.
- Knowledge of Applied Epic is preferred.
- Proficiency in MS applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Familiarity with compliance frameworks, such as SOX, GDPR, and HIPAA, is an asset.
- Possession of designations like Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) or Canadian Risk Management (CRM) is desirable.
- A proven understanding of audit standards and methodologies, with the ability to apply risk assessment, risk mitigation, and risk management principles.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the capacity to analyze complex data, identify patterns, and make informed decisions.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective interaction with employees, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with experience handling multiple priorities and requests.
- A high level of focus, attention to detail, and ability to collaborate well with others.
