Indigenous Student Support Worker

The Halifax Regional Centre for Education is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive work environment that reflects the communities it serves. We are seeking a qualified Mi'kmaw/Indigenous Student Support Worker to join our team.
About the Role:The Mi'kmaw/Indigenous Student Support Worker will contribute to the support for Mi'kmaw and other Indigenous students to ensure improved achievement and a positive school experience. The Student Support Worker will develop strategies to help students achieve success, support School Principals on initiatives which address student achievement for Mi'kmaw and other Indigenous students, and work with School Principals and staff in developing effective communication links for Mi'kmaw and other Indigenous youth and their families.
Responsibilities:- Provide targeted support to Mi'kmaw and other Indigenous students to ensure improved achievement and a positive school experience.
- Develop strategies to help students achieve success, including case management and record keeping.
- Support School Principals on initiatives which address student achievement for Mi'kmaw and other Indigenous students.
- Work with School Principals and staff in developing effective communication links for Mi'kmaw and other Indigenous youth and their families.
(a) Undergraduate degree in social sciences or Social Work, or combination of work experience, life skills training, and training in working with students;
(b) Experience working with Indigenous students and communities through approaches which enhance the greatness, strengths, and abilities of Indigenous students;
(c) Minimum three (3) years demonstrated experience providing targeted support to youth;
(d) Experience with case management and/or record keeping considered an asset.
Working Conditions:The Student Support Worker will work a 10-month school year, with a 7-hour day (excluding lunch) totalling 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
Salary:The starting annual salary is $41,268.31 paid across 12 months. Student Support Workers are paid every two weeks. Salary is based on a six (6) step scale with step increases occurring annually in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
