Job Summary

The Mortgage Underwriter will play a critical role in the company's mortgage lending business, responsible for adjudicating mortgage applications and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess mortgage applications and make prudent credit decisions on complex files
  • Review and analyze mortgage applications for completeness, accuracy, and risk, ensuring compliance with company policies and procedures
  • Adhere to applicable compliance obligations, including Privacy, Anti-Money Laundering/Anti-Terrorist Financing, and internal Anti-Fraud Policy requirements
  • File Unusual Transaction Reports as applicable and maintain consistent, objective, and sound risk assessments in a high-volume, service-oriented environment
  • Negotiate loan terms to meet the interests of clients and the company's risk tolerance
  • Review files and recommend mortgage deals for final approval, maintaining accurate information and detailed notes on applications
  • Prepare and issue conditional mortgage commitments outlining all conditions that must be met to the company's satisfaction
  • Issue mortgage commitments according to negotiated and approved terms
  • Review completeness and quality of file documentation prepared by Originations prior to funding

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma required (University degree preferred)
  • 3-5 years (5+ years for Senior) with mortgage lending experience
  • Strong understanding of residential mortgage products
  • Proficient in adjudicating credit
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and time management skills
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Proficient in MS Office

Working Conditions

  • Some work beyond standard hours may be required
  • Bilingualism is an asset
