Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Mental Health Care Assistant to join our team at Providence Health Care. In this role, you will provide support to patients with complex mental health, neurological, and neurocognitive disorders in a tertiary mental health unit/program.
About the Role
As a Mental Health Care Assistant, you will work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary care team to promote a safe, respectful, and civil working environment for patients, residents, families, visitors, and staff. You will be responsible for providing personal care, hygiene, and comfort to patients, including bathing, dressing, skin and nail care, mouth care, perineal care, and hair care according to established care plans.
You will also provide a safe and respectful environment for patients by following safety instructions and PHC policies and procedures when carrying out designated components of the established care plan. This includes activities such as toileting, continence care, lifting and transferring, bathing, positioning, and ambulating, as well as independent use of wheelchairs.
In addition, you will carry out individual or group leisure activities, such as arts and crafts, woodworking, gardening, sports, games, socio-cultural events, and social outings as directed. You will communicate the activity to patients, their families, and staff, accompany patients on outings and appointments, and support patients during the activity.
Responsibilities
- Provides and/or assists patients with personal care, hygiene, and comfort
- Creates a safe and respectful environment for patients
- Carrries out individual or group leisure activities
- Performs tasks assigned by nursing staff
- Contributes to the overall evaluation of patients and supports continuity of care
- Establishes positive relationships with patients and their families
- Assists patients with meals and nourishments
- Maintains a safe work environment
- Handles, stores, and disposes of workplace hazardous materials
- Operates and cleans equipment related to patient care
- Supports continuity of care and reports problems to designated nursing staff
- Transports patients using mechanical aides
- Provides close, constant care or observation of patients
- Checks and restocks supplies
- Performs laundry-related duties
- Performs related clerical duties
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you must have Grade 10, graduation from a recognized Resident Care Attendant Program, and successful completion of an Acute Care Skills Program or three (3) months recent, related experience in an acute care and/or mental health acute care environment. You must also possess excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, and be able to deal with others effectively.
