Position Overview
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the BC Children's Mental Health sector plays a crucial role in delivering comprehensive therapeutic care to patients exhibiting behavioral, emotional, and psychiatric challenges, along with their families and caregivers. This role encompasses the provision and coordination of nursing services, including patient assessments, educational support for families, and health promotion initiatives tailored for mental health patients and their families, all in alignment with the established policies and standards of the BC Children's Mental Health Program.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate patient records by gathering and documenting essential health care information, including nursing observations and interventions, to ensure completeness and currency.
- Develop individualized care plans by reviewing patient and family histories and collaborating with the healthcare team to optimize patient care.
- Deliver direct patient care, which includes physical, psychiatric, and meal support, adhering to operational policies and standards.
- Educate patients and families by providing clear information, demonstrating procedures, and evaluating the effectiveness of teaching methods.
- Identify personal learning needs and engage in professional development activities to enhance nursing practice.
- Participate in the training and education of new staff and students through mentorship and role modeling.
- Act as a clinical resource for patients, families, and healthcare professionals by providing insights into nursing decisions.
- Contribute to the healthcare team by sharing relevant information during rounds, committees, and meetings.
- Provide feedback to leadership regarding policies and operational needs based on observed service requirements.
- Ensure a safe environment for all by adhering to established safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Support nursing research and quality improvement initiatives by participating in relevant committees and educational opportunities.
- Perform additional duties as required in a professional capacity.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with current registration as an RN or RPN.
- A minimum of one year of recent clinical experience in a child and/or youth mental health setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Skills and Attributes
- In-depth knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of behavioral and mental health issues in children and adolescents.
- Familiarity with Trauma-Informed Care principles and collaborative problem-solving approaches.
- Understanding of child and youth developmental theories.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to build effective relationships with children, adolescents, and their families.
- Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team and independently.
- Capability to adapt to changing situations and resolve conflicts effectively.
- Proficiency in CPR techniques and the physical ability to perform job duties.
- Commitment to understanding and addressing Indigenous-specific issues in healthcare.
