About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Design Engineer to join our Project Engineering team in Kincardine, ON. As a key member of our design team, you will be responsible for coordinating and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to understand design inputs and requirements, schedules, finances, and performance for assigned projects.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to OPG's continued growth and success in generating safe, clean, reliable low-cost power in a sustainable manner. Key accountabilities include:

  1. FOLLOWING OPG'S ENGINEERING CHANGE CONTROL PROCESS TO PREPARE DESIGN CHANGE PACKAGES such as Modifications, Temporary Modifications, and Non-Identical Component Replacements; IEE (item Equivalency Evaluation), Procurement Engineering Evaluations, MEL (Master Equipment List), Lead or support conceptual, preliminary, and detail design phases for Design Change Packages;
  2. PREPARING DESIGN REPORTS, ENGINEERING SPECIFICATIONS, ENGINEERING CALCULATIONS, TECHNICAL EVALUATIONS, ADVICE, AND DIRECTION, SOLVING PROBLEMS AND COORDINATING TECHNICAL WORK AS REQUIRED, IN SEVERAL MAJOR WORK AREAS, IN SUPPORT OF THE COMMISSIONING, OPERATION, AND MAINTENANCE OF THE FACILITIES;
  3. MAINTAINING AND/OR UPDATING OPERATING AND OTHER SPECIFIED DEPARTMENT/DIVISIONAL PROCEDURES. RECEIVING ASSIGNMENTS RELATING TO PROCEDURES FROM SUPERVISOR OR IDENTIFYING POTENTIAL PROBLEMS AND OPPORTUNITIES. PREPARING NEW OR REVISED PROCEDURES CONSISTENT WITH OPERATING LICENSES, POLICIES, PRINCIPLES, DEPARTMENT STANDARD PRACTICES, STANDING INSTRUCTIONS, MAXIMUM SAFETY OF OPERATION, MINIMAL RISK OF DAMAGE OR LOSS, OPTIMUM FREQUENCY OF ROUTINES, EFFICIENT OPERATION, AND THE LIKE. SUBMITTING FOR REVIEW AND APPROVAL.
  4. DESIGN SUPPORT TO PROJECTS AND MINOR MODIFICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE NSS WESTERN WASTE MANAGEMENT PROCESS;
  5. LEADERSHIP IN INITIATIVES THAT SUPPORT IMPROVED CURRENT AND LONG-TERM EFFICIENCIES AND PERFORMANCE;
  6. SUPPORTING DAY-TO-DAY AND EMERGENT ISSUES;
  7. PLANNING, COORDINATING, AND CONDUCTING ENGINEERING ASSESSMENTS, STUDIES, INSPECTIONS, INVESTIGATIONS, DESIGNS, AND EVALUATIONS SYSTEMS;
  8. PERFORMING FIELD INSPECTIONS, ACCEPTANCE, AND APPROVALS;
  9. MAINTAINING WRITTEN PROCESSES AND PROCEDURES TO REFLECT IMPROVED OPERATING METHODS AND ADDITIONS TO ALL SUPPORTED SYSTEMS; MAINTAINING PROCESS COMPLIANCE DURING PROJECT EXECUTION. SUPPORTING ENGINEERING ACCEPTANCE OF MODIFICATION TURNOVERS;
  10. PROVIDING ENGINEERING CHANGE CONTROL GUIDANCE, PROVIDING ACTIVE SUPPORT TO FIELD ISSUES AND FIELD INITIATED CHANGES, AND FACILITATING A POSITIVE OUTCOME WITH EPC VENDORS;
  11. UNDERSTANDING IMPACTS ON COST AND SCHEDULE AND PROVIDING SUPPORT TO MINIMIZE IMPACTS DRIVING PROJECTS;
  12. GATHERING INPUT FROM STAKEHOLDER DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES TO ENSURE PROJECT AND MODIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE CAPTURED AND DETAILED IN THE PROJECT DOCUMENTS;
  13. COLLABORATING WITH CUSTOMERS, STAKEHOLDERS, CONSULTANTS, CONTRACTORS, AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AS REQUIRED;
  14. RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES, EQUIPMENT FAILURE, UNSATISFACTORY EQUIPMENT PERFORMANCE, CONDUCTING FIELD INVESTIGATIONS, PREPARING REPORTS, AND RECOMMENDING ACTIONS;
  15. DEVELOPING PLANS, STANDARDS, AND TECHNICAL PROCEDURES FOR INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE, AND MONITORING PROGRAMS;

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical/Chemical/Nuclear Engineering;
  • Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario.

Qualifications:

  • 6-10 years of Design experience required, preferably with OPG or Nuclear Industry;
  • Must have experience working in highly regulated industries, nuclear sector experience is an asset;
  • OPG Design Engineer qualification will be an asset;
  • Knowledge of OPG's ECC Process (Engineering Change Control) will be an asset;
  • Experience and ability as a team player to understand and manage the interrelationships of various internal and external groups to facilitate objectives and ensure projects satisfy stakeholder requirements;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and must be comfortable leading meetings and giving presentations;
  • Have a strong interest in a fast-paced, challenging work environment where showing initiative and self-motivation are assets;
  • Proven track record on delivering results;
  • Strong in understanding, executing and following governance and procedures with a questioning and analytical attitude/approach under minimum required supervision;
  • Candidate must be motivated to use technology and online platforms;
