Job Title: Indigenous Cultural Support Worker

Join the Anglophone East School District team as an Indigenous Cultural Support Worker, a vital role in supporting the academic, social, and emotional well-being of Indigenous students.

About the Role

The Indigenous Cultural Support Worker will work collaboratively with the school-based ESS Team to provide input, recommendations, and intervention strategies to support Indigenous students. This role involves creating circles of care through cultural inclusive activities, collaboration, and communication with the school, family, Knowledge Keepers, district staff, and community partners.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the school-based ESS Team to provide input, recommendations, and intervention strategies to support Indigenous students.
  • Design and implement initiatives focused on strengthening Indigenous identity and pride, working collaboratively with school staff.
  • Organize cultural awareness training and initiatives for school administration, staff, and students, engaging Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and other Indigenous cultural supports as needed.
  • Refer students for additional support services when necessary.
  • Collect, monitor, and maintain data to report on academic progress, attendance, and course levels, making evidence-informed decisions with the administration and staff.
  • Participate in and plan with district-based Indigenous PLC for professional learning.
  • Accompany students to culturally relevant activities during and/or after school hours.
Career Guidance and Transitioning
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, families, community, students, and other stakeholders.
  • Facilitate transitioning of students from middle and high schools and to other grade levels.
  • Work collaboratively with EST-Guidance Counsellors to develop a broad and current knowledge base of post-secondary education programs and options.
  • Assist students as they navigate social, academic, and career path challenges.
  • Serve as an advocate representing assigned students.
Academic and Other Support
  • Maintain a working knowledge of subject area curricula and inclusive instructional practices to collaborate with classroom teachers.
  • Provide specially designed instruction as an intervention in collaboration with the classroom teacher.
  • Consult regularly with teachers of assigned student(s).
  • Work collaboratively to monitor student progress, based on the common plan.
  • Provide student(s) support and guidance to assist them in coping with social, guidance, and academic challenges.
Qualifications

Applicants must have a minimum of 2 years of experience working with Indigenous Children and Youth, demonstrate a high degree of cultural competence, and have strong ties to First Nation community(ies). Excellent organizational and communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with parents, school staff, and community-based organizations.

A combination of education and experience in essential qualifications such as Restorative, trauma-informed, culturally relevant practices, Counselling, Social work, Sociology, Indigenous Studies, Psychology, and Education is preferred.
