Lead Animator Job Description

At Framestore, we're looking for a talented Lead Animator to join our team. As a key member of our animation department, you'll be responsible for leading small teams of animators and supporting our Animation Supervisors in creating high-quality animation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Set the standard for animation quality within the department.
  • Collaborate with the Animation Supervisor to produce exceptional animation and create engaging, story-driven moments that fit the film's style and pacing.
  • Support the Animation Supervisor by leading the animation of a sequence or character, providing creative and technical feedback to your team.
  • Work closely with the Rigging, Production, and Pipeline departments to improve character setup, visual quality, rigs, and tool functionality.
  • Maintain open communication with Production, Supervisors, and other Leads regarding schedules and deadlines.
  • Work efficiently as part of a team or independently to complete assigned shots.
  • Submit shots for review and follow up with notes and feedback.
  • Meet schedules and show deadlines.
  • Stay up-to-date with new tools, software, data, and related technology.
Essential Skills:
  • Previous experience in a similar role.
  • A deep understanding of performance and acting, physical motion, weight, balance, texture, and form.
  • A thorough knowledge of Maya.
  • Excellent organisation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • A demonstrable commitment to creative collaboration within a team and with other departments.
  • Reliable, with good time keeping and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • An understanding of rigs and typical rigging set-ups, animation pipelines, and transferring data between tools.
  • The ability to work under pressure.
  • Being open to direction and able to adapt to change.
  • Attention to detail.
Desirable Skills:
  • An understanding of story, acting, and film-making.
  • A traditional animation and/or art background.
  • Knowledge of human and animal anatomy.
  • A working knowledge of Modeling, Rigging, and Mel/Python scripting.
  • Previous experience working with motion capture data.
