About the Opportunity

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will work in collaboration with our Pathology and Laboratory Medicine team to perform various functions relating to the pre and post-analytical phases of testing. This includes specimen procurement, data entry, media preparation, sterilization, and customer service activities.

You will be responsible for positive patient identification and accurate specimen handling, adhering to all applicable NSH/PLM policies and procedures. The ideal candidate must be able to work independently, use good judgment, maintain a professional appearance, and demonstrate excellent customer service.

Responsibilities
  • Perform specimen procurement, receipt, and processing tasks
  • Data entry and media preparation
  • Sterilization and equipment maintenance
  • Customer service and communication with clients
  • Collaborate with laboratory staff to ensure smooth workflow and efficient operations
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • A recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent
  • Candidates must have successfully completed the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and have current registration with CSMLS
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Manual dexterity to handle sharp instruments and small objects
Compensation and Benefits

The hourly rate for this position is between $23.19 and $26.27, depending on experience and qualifications. Successful candidates may also be eligible for benefits, including health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage, as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
