As a critical player in the Labour Relations, Policy and Programs (LRPP) Division, the Director, Labour Relations and Negotiations will inspire innovation and excellence in leading consolidation in key areas of labour relations and negotiations.

This role involves leading the Labour Relations and Negotiations team, overseeing negotiations and bargaining strategy, facilitating/reviewing labour relations policies, directives, programs, and initiatives in unionized and non-unionized work environments across the Alberta Public Service (APS) and throughout other Canadian jurisdictions.

The successful candidate should have experience within a large, sophisticated unionized environment and knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Alberta Labour Relations Code, Public Service Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the consultation, preparation, and negotiations process for collective bargaining
  • Developing negotiation strategies and ensuring mandates and proposals are aligned with employer interests
  • Participating in collective bargaining, negotiations, and settlement proceedings
  • Informing Senior Government of Alberta leadership on complex labour negotiations issues

A university degree supplemented by six years of progressively responsible experience is required. Relevant skills and qualifications include:

  • Experience in leading and mentoring a team of labour relations and negotiations professionals
  • Knowledge of essential services processes and contingency business continuity planning
  • Ability to conduct environmental scanning and review of labour and employment policy directives, guidelines, and policies
