About the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies

Mt. Royal University's Faculty of Business and Communication Studies is comprised of two schools: the Bissett School of Business and the School of Communication Studies. The Bissett School of Business offers a four-year Bachelor of Business Administration degree, as well as diploma and certificate programs. The School of Communication Studies offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Communication degree, with majors in Broadcast Media Studies, Information Design, Journalism & Digital Media, and Public Relations.

The School of Communication Studies is home to three departments: Public Relations, Information Design, and Broadcasting and Journalism. The faculty is composed of approximately 25 full-time faculty and 37 contract faculty.

About the Course

JOUR 1728 Digital Storytelling II is a 3-credit course that is a journalism requirement in Year 1. The course is also available to students seeking Gen Ed credit and those enrolled in the Digital Media Minor. The course runs in-person on Tuesday afternoons from 1 until 3:50 pm. Students will undertake projects in video and photojournalism storytelling while applying key critical theoretical understandings to their own practices.

About the Role

The program is seeking a contract instructor with significant experience in teaching digital storytelling. The instructor will teach students in Year 1, helping them with basic videography and photography shooting and editing in a journalism context. Candidates must possess a Master's degree. Those with Ph D credentials will be given preference. Communications and media theory scholars will be given preference given how the course is situated in the Bachelor of Communication Studies degree.

Responsibilities

- Developing course materials, activities and assessments that lead to a practical hands-on introduction to introductory visual storytelling.
- Providing hands-on training in video editing, and basic story development.
- All grading and assessment of student submissions, shared in MRU's course management system, D2L

Qualifications

- Understanding of visual storytelling
- Video recording and editing experience using Adobe Premiere Pro
- Basic photography experience with some Adobe Photoshop editing skills preferred
- Demonstrated teaching experience, preferably in post-secondary venues
- A master's degree in a relevant field is required and candidates with Ph D preferred
