About the Role



We are seeking a dedicated Mental Health Nursing Specialist to join our team at BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services in Coquitlam, BC.



What You Will Do



This is an exciting opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing care and support to individuals with complex mental health needs. As a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse, you will be responsible for providing direct care in accordance with individualized care plans, assessing clinical requirements, and participating in interdisciplinary assessment and screening processes.




  • Provide direct care in accordance with individualized care plans, recognizing and identifying signs and symptoms of patients' conditions, reporting, and recording as indicated.
  • Collect and document patient health care information, maintaining accurate records of nursing observations, interventions, and evaluations.
  • Plan direct care and contribute to the physical and psychological well-being of patients by assessing clinical requirements, developing care plans based on identified needs, and implementing care plans, evaluating outcomes, and revising plans to address gaps and respond to patients' needs.
  • Consult with nurses, members of the interdisciplinary team, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care planning and maintain liaison between nurses, physicians, family, and community resources for individual patients to ensure continuity of care.
  • SUPPORT PATIENTS WITH PSYCHOSOCIAL, LIFE, AND PERSONAL CARE SKILLS BY TEACHING AND PROVIDING GUIDANCE TO PATIENTS, SUPERVISING AND PARTICIPATING IN ROUTINE CARE OF THE PATIENTS INCLUDING PERSONAL HYGIENE AND MAINTAINING NORMAL BODY FUNCTIONS; UTILIZE ACCEPTED MODALITIES SUCH AS SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY, ROLE-PLAYING, AND GROUP THERAPY; AND IDENTIFY AND PURSUE ADVOCACY ISSUES ON BEHALF OF PATIENTS.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, families, and staff by following established emergency procedures and safety practices and procedures, assuming responsibility for unit security, and directing tasks specific to the maintenance of security to provide appropriate care delivery.


About You



To be successful in this role, you must have a strong foundation in psychiatric nursing principles and practices, with experience working in a forensic or acute psychiatric hospital setting. You should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.



Qualifications




  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
  • One (1) year of recent experience working in a forensic or acute psychiatric hospital setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Skills and Knowledge




  • Current and updated knowledge of changes and developments in the practice of psychiatric nursing and applicable Federal and Provincial legislation, including the Criminal Code of Canada, Forensic Psychiatry Act, the Mental Health Act, the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Young Offenders Act, and Public Trustee Act.
  • Broad knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of behavioral, social emotional, and mental health/psychiatric issues in adults.
  • Broad knowledge of adult education principles, methods, and tools.
  • Demonstrated organizational, facilitation, decision-making, and leadership skills.
  • Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • Familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.) is considered an asset.
