About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse to join our team at Fraser Health. As a Mental Health Specialist, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality care to patients experiencing serious mental health and bio-psychosocial problems.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Nursing Care and Assessment: Conduct thorough assessments of patients' physical and psychosocial needs, develop and implement individualized care plans, and provide evidence-based interventions to promote recovery and well-being.
  2. Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals, to ensure seamless care coordination and effective communication with patients and families.
  3. Crisis Intervention and Support: Provide crisis intervention and support to patients and families, utilizing evidence-based techniques and strategies to de-escalate situations and promote safety.
  4. Education and Health Promotion: Educate patients and families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and self-management strategies, promoting empowerment and autonomy.
  5. Leadership and Quality Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives, contribute to the development of policies and procedures, and provide leadership and guidance to colleagues to enhance patient care and outcomes.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with a current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • One (1) year recent related mental health experience in an acute, tertiary, or community setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and access to personal vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage (may be required).
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing mental health and substance use client assessments and provide nursing care through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety-type interventions, including crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of mental illness and substance use treatment, psychosocial rehabilitation, and recovery.
  • Working knowledge of psychopharmacology (indications and side-effects) and crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Ability to promote person-centered care, empathy, and sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences.
  • Ability to educate patients and families about mental health conditions and treatment options.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and promote cooperation among team members.
  • Ability to use factual information and basic principles and procedures to support nursing decisions and actions with relevant research-based evidence/evidence-informed practice.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, including relevant computer applications.
