About the Role

Austin Powder Ltd. is seeking a highly skilled Surface Mining Blaster to join our team. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for conducting field tests, determining the type and quantity of explosives required, and ensuring the safe and efficient execution of blasting operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct Field Tests: Determine the type and quantity of explosives required for each blast.
  • Determine Blast Hole Depths and Diameters: Measure and calculate the optimal depths and diameters for blast holes.
  • Direct Explosive Trucks: Safely direct explosive trucks to load holes and ensure accurate placement of explosives.
  • Load Explosives: Load explosives into blast holes by hand, following strict safety protocols.
  • Read Instructions and Lay Out Drill Patterns: Read and interpret instructions and diagrams to lay out drill patterns for optimal blasting results.
  • Ensure Health and Safety Regulations: Adhere to all health and safety regulations, including proper handling and storage of explosives.
  • Connect Electrical Wires and Detonating Cords: Connect electrical wires and detonating cords to blasting machines, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
  • Measure and Stake Out Blast Hole Patterns: Measure and stake out the pattern of holes to be drilled, loaded with explosives, and detonated to dislodge coal, ore, or rock.
  • Handle and Store Explosives: Safely handle, store, and transport explosives and accessories, adhering to all regulations and safety procedures.
  • Assemble Primer Charges: Assemble or direct other workers to assemble primer charges using selected detonators, fuses, detonating cords, and other materials.
Requirements
  • Provincial Blasting Licence: Possess a valid provincial blasting licence.
  • Blaster Trade Certification: Hold a blaster trade certification.
  • Equipment and Machinery Experience: Have experience with blasting machines, detonating cords, detonators, fuses, and safety mats.
  • Area of Work Experience: Have experience working on construction sites, open-pit mines, and quarries.
  • Security and Safety: Possess a bondable status, basic security clearance, and a valid driver's licence.
  • Transportation/Travel Information: Have a valid driver's licence and be willing to travel for work.
  • Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities: Be able to work under pressure, lift heavy loads, and stand for extended periods.
  • Personal Suitability: Possess excellent oral communication skills, flexibility, and a team player attitude.
